Janis Joplin's sister, Laura, became a published author. Her brother, Mike, became
a well established artist. Janis helped both of her siblings with the direction their
talents took them.
Many talented people, especially in the field of the fine arts, have come from Jefferson
County Texas. From my observation, many of them had to leave the area to become famous
and/or successful. We do have some well known celebrities who still live in this area.
What all of this has to say for this area of Texas I am uncertain.
People I have met through the years in other cities and in other states have not only
fond memories of their hometowns but many of them can go back and still see the physical
memories. As for Port Arthur, Texas, the only thing I can say for myself is my memories
of Port Arthur are all I have other than my current husband, my sister and her husband.
It's nice to be close for my high school class reunions even though the school no longer
exist. Our Yellow Jacket mascot was put to rest. Rest his stinger!
The city of Port Arthur is not much to see anymore. The hurricanes have destroyed much of
life here. Many homes and businesses have not been restored or they were torn down or replaced.
However, there are many cultural events to attend in this area of Texas. Hunters and fishermen
and women who hunt or fish have plenty to do here. Bird watchers also flock here. In Beaumont
we have Lamar University which is an excellent four year university.
I myself left after graduating from High School. I am back now due to marrying my childhood
playmate and high school sweetheart whom I never forgot. He never left this area. I am glad
for that. It is also wonderful to now be living close to my sister and her husband. But then
none of us live in Port Arthur. We are still in Jefferson County though.
Regardless of ones views of Janis, her reasons for leaving, her reasons for living, and the
way she left this earth, I have to give her credit for knowing what she wanted and the courage
and the fortitude for going for it. After all much opinion is just that, opinions, depending
upon whose eyes you are looking through.
